HOTELS AND RESORTS

Hotels and resorts picked for the trip you are actually taking.

From a quiet room near the arena to a full resort for the whole family, Keith Wilson books the stay around your plans and your budget.

Matching the hotel to the trip, not the other way around

A room is only good if it fits what the trip is for. A hotel that suits a long weekend of ball games is the wrong pick for a week of sitting by the water, and a resort built for lounging is a poor base for a meeting that starts at eight. Keith Wilson starts with the reason for the trip, then looks at properties, rather than flipping through a list of rooms and hoping one fits.

That is the same habit he used for thirty-plus years as a head varsity basketball coach: know the game before you pick the players. Who is traveling, how old they are, how far each person wants to walk, what the days look like from breakfast to bedtime. Once that is on paper, the shortlist gets short fast.

KBW Sports and Travel works with individuals, families, groups and business travelers from Columbus, Ohio, and the hotel side of the booking follows the same rule for all of them: the trip decides the property.

Resorts that put every option under one roof

KBW offers a wide variety of hotels and resorts, with options for nearly every kind of stay. Some travelers want a single property with the pool, the dining, the beach and the evening entertainment all in reach, so nobody has to plan a car ride to enjoy the day. Others want a quiet room, a good bed and the freedom to roam.

Resorts take the guessing out for a group that includes a toddler, a teenager and a grandparent, because each of them finds something to do without leaving the grounds. Keith walks through what each resort actually includes so you can see where the value sits before anyone commits.

If the resort is part of a larger plan, such as a cruise departure or a wedding weekend, the hotel gets booked around that schedule. Arrival day, departure day and the nights in between all line up.

What to ask before a room is held

Most hotel problems are visible on paper if somebody reads it first. Keith reads the room description, the included amenities and the change terms before you pay, and flags anything that looks different from what you asked for.

That is the quiet value of working with an agent instead of clicking through a booking site alone. Someone on your side reads the fine print, and you can reach a real person at 214 418 4232 on a weekday if a detail changes. The five questions in the panel below are the ones worth asking on any trip, with any agent.

Five questions to ask before you book a room

Ask these of any agent, any site, any front desk. The answers tell you what the room really is. Pair them with a plan for the rest of the trip on the leisure travel page.

ADMIT ONE · ROOM CHECK

  1. 01 What does the rate cover?

Which room type and bed setup is this, and which meals, activities and transfers are in the rate and which are extra?

  2. 02 What gets added at the desk?

Resort fees, parking and similar charges are often listed apart from the room. Ask for every one of them before you say yes.

  3. 03 How far is it from where you need to be?

The ship terminal, the venue, the meeting room, the airport. A cheap room far from the plan costs time every single day.

  4. 04 What is the change window?

Find out until when plans can change, what happens if they do, and get the terms in writing.

  5. 05 How does arrival day line up?

Check-in time against your landing time, and whether the front desk will hold bags if the room is not ready.
